WELDER, might look like a cross between Scrabble and Bejeweled, but this extremely addictive word game is a star in its own right.
The object of the game is simple enough: swap letter tiles vertically, horizontally or diagonally on a board to make words at least four letters long. As in Scrabble, word tiles have different values. Blank tiles, on to which you can stamp your own letters, don’t carry any points, but golden tiles score double. The catch is that you’re only allowed to make a limited number of swaps at each stage. You start with 25 to swap, and every 250 points you get five more. Run out of swaps and it’s game over. The pressure can really start to build as the game progresses.
The sound effects and graphics are brilliant, but there’s an educational element too: if you’ve formed a word you don’t know the meaning of, just tap it to instantly see its definition.
We also like the fact that the game can be played on all iOS devices, and if you have iCloud, the games can be finished on your iPod later. This app is a great way to improve your wordpower.
